Tall Ships Trip 2024

Jack Hunt School Students Embark on Tall Ships Adventure

Portsmouth, UK - October 2024

A group of adventurous students from Jack Hunt School recently set sail on the trip of a lifetime, taking part in the prestigious 2024 Tall Ships voyage. The students embarked on a five-day sailing expedition from Portsmouth, navigating around the English Channel and the Isle of Wight. For many, this was their first experience on the open sea, offering a rare opportunity to learn the ropes of sailing.

The students worked as a crew aboard a traditional tall ship, where they received hands-on training in the fundamentals of navigation, sailing techniques, and boat operations. Under the guidance of experienced skippers and teachers Mr Lomas and Miss Humphrey, they learnt how to hoist and trim the sails, steer the vessel using the ship's wheel, and even handle the complex task of mooring in various ports along the way. The teamwork required to run the ship smoothly quickly became second nature to the group, who embraced every challenge thrown their way.

One of the highlights of the trip was the experience of night sailing. As the sun set over the horizon, the students navigated through the dark waters of the Channel, relying on instruments and their newfound skills to guide them. The thrill of working under the stars and feeling the power of the wind and waves was a magical experience that none will forget.

During their journey, the students were treated to some extraordinary moments, including a rare sighting of dolphins swimming alongside the ship. Their excitement was palpable as the playful creatures leapt through the waves, adding to the sense of wonder and adventure.

For the more daring amongst the group, there was even the chance to climb the ship's towering mast. With safety harnesses in place, they scaled the rigging and were rewarded with breathtaking views from high above the deck, taking in the vast expanse of the sea and the beautiful coastline.

This Tall Ships trip was more than just an adventure; it was a unique educational experience. The students developed practical skills, including learning to read nautical charts and operating onboard equipment, while also building confidence, leadership, and resilience. The teamwork involved in running the ship helped them form strong bonds with their peers, and many found a newfound appreciation for the challenges and rewards of life at sea.

Teacher Mr Lomas said during the trip - "Third day at sea and the students have become comfortable with yacht life. It has been such a privilege to watch our sixth formers lead the younger students. Team work, camaraderie and lots of fun! Even if it involves washing dishes"

The students returned to Portsmouth with a sense of accomplishment, having completed their journey and gained lifelong memories. For those who took part, the 2024 Tall Ships trip was an unforgettable experience, providing a taste of adventure and a chance to try something completely new.
